5 Tips for Women on How to Be Amazing on Camera

Getting in front of the camera can be daunting to many.

But that doesn’t always have to be the case. There are many ways to ease your fear and look confident, like a pro even, regardless if you are a beginner. Although I’ve been on camera a several times, I wouldn’t consider myself a pro, but I’ve been blessed with mentors who give me tips on how to feel comfortable on camera so you can look amazing. And believe me, they’re not that difficult! Anybody could do it and I want to share it with you.

And why should you invest the time to work on your screen presence? Most people rely on visual learning and videos provide better impact on  your personal branding. Youtube is the second most popular search engine, after Google – so your videos have so much potential to reach your fans and have them connect with you on a deeper level.

So let’s dive into my 5 top tips so you can just glow right through the screen:

Tip # 1 – Look Your Best

  • Wear clothing that makes you feel comfortable and brings out your personality. Even if you’re not talking face to face, people still want to see the real you and what you wear is a great way to express your personality and convey your energy.
  • Put some makeup on. Whether you love to rock the natural look, or enjoy giving yourself a ‘full face’, when it comes to being on camera, you’re going to need a little touch up here and there. Heck, even guys get their noses powdered when they are onscreen! Makeup helps highlight your natural features that would otherwise be drowned out by lighting and the way you come across on screen. Think of it as helping your eyes pop and you cheeks glow, which doesn’t always naturally appear on film.
  • Smile genuinely. Look inviting and approachable – just because you are not face to face with your audience, they’ll still be able to feel your energy through the screen. One good tip in smiling is to not just use your mouth but also your eyes. Tyra Banks referred to it as “smizes”.

Tip #2 – Be Sincere

  • Practice good posture. Sit up or stand up straight. It shows confidence & professionalism. Poor posture makes it seem like you don’t like what you’re doing and you’re not taking it seriously.
  • Talk like you’re making a conversation. Address your viewers as if you’re talking to them personally. Conversational videos tend to be more effective in keeping audiences entertained rather than it being monotonous and boring.
  • Be aware of your body language. Are you fidgety? Little details like this can be caught on camera and it doesn’t look good. Refrain from doing unnecessary motions by relaxing – take a deep breath, look in the mirror, and tell yourself you are going to rock this!

Tip #3 – Sound Loud & Clear

  • Practice speaking in front of the mirror before shooting your video. Make sure you articulate your words properly without mumbling. Look at your facial expressions while speaking as well. It’s not just about speaking, it’s how you say it.
  • Stay in the context of your topic. You came up with the core message of your video, now your goal is to make your audience understand it easily, and have them connect with you. Avoid going off topic and stick to the point.
  • Make sure your mic is working properly. You may have a good story to tell but your audience can’t hear you due to low volume or bad feedback. Your microphone can be the culprit. Invest in a good microphone that can give your audience a good listening experience.

And that’s not all…

Tip #4 – Prepare Before Shooting

  • Pick a good venue. Make sure you’re shooting in a quiet place without too many distractions. It’s not good to have traffic sounds of cars honking or moving while you talk at the same time.
  • Create some good lighting. Let your audience see you clearly with the help of added lighting in an indoor setting.
  • Write a short script. It doesn’t have to be a full script. Write an outline on the things you want to talk about and let that be your guide throughout your video. This will help you stick to the point and not get lost in the middle.

Tip #5 – Have fun!

  • Relax. Don’t be nervous. Do a few exercises and drink a glass of water before going on camera so you can be calm & collected. This will give you more control and confidence.
  • Don’t forget to breathe. Take deep breaths before shooting and breathe naturally while recording. This helps you in regulating your talking speed too.
  • Ask your viewers to share. Let your viewers know how much you value their time for watching and if they think that your video was good, ask them to like, subscribe and share.

There you have it. My 5 tips on how to look amazing on camera. The bottom line…

Just be yourself and act naturally! You are a confident, beautiful woman who is capable of sending out a good message out there so keep spreading the positive vibe.
