Hi, Serena, and welcome to the Stellar Life podcast. Thank you so much for being here, darling. It’s nice to see you.

Thank you so much. I’m glad to see you. You look beautiful, and seeing you is always such a blessing. 

You’re very much an inspiration. You guys will learn a little bit about her in a minute. This beauty is a powerhouse. Today, she’s going to share a little bit about her brand, a little bit about how she created this success, and some longevity secrets. And, of course, everything Serena Loves and where it’s heading. Before we begin, please share a little bit about your passion. What is your mission in life? Why are you here?

Oh, well, thank you. That’s a beautiful way to begin. Thank you for having me here. So my mission, my passion—people often ask me where it came from. That’s my parents, and I can always trickle back and talk about that. But my mission is simple. I truly feel that I’m here to help people heal and optimize their well-being and their health, whatever that looks like for them.

I am in an endless pursuit of improving myself, and then I take that information and share it with my community.

In that process, to live a long and vibrant life. Some people call that healthspan vs. lifespan. That’s why I’m here. I do that in several different ways. Of course, we do that by creating content and making that available and accessible. I am in an endless pursuit of what I can do to improve myself. Then I take that information and share it with my community.

It’s not just what you do, what you put into your body, and what you do to your physical body, but also what you do with your emotional body, energy body, soul body, and mind body.

My journey began when my parents were sick with cancer, which is where the inspiration for this mission comes from. They were very young, in their 40s. Then I journey through this evolution of self-care and self-love. So often, when we are caretakers, we pour all our energy into caring for the ones we love the most. We forget about ourselves. Usually, that’s the core foundation and the root of our imbalances.

Our discomforts often come from that. Our soul, mind, heart, and body speak to our physical body when those discomforts arise. That often comes from not putting enough care into ourselves, as we care for everything else, whether it’s our loved ones, families, or business. Through that journey, I had several health challenges of my own. I went through eight different surgeries.

Wow. For what?

I had MRSA, which is a deadly staph infection. It came about after a surgery that I had. My daddy had been diagnosed with stage four cancer when I was still in college, my senior year. He fought a really hard battle with that. He transitioned a little over a year.

I’m sorry.

He’s probably a few months longer than expected, so he’s a warrior. After he transitioned at 48, our mom was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer. She was 45. So you know, at the time, it’s just a lot of chaos and fear. There’s so much in that process, as your loved one and the whole family are going through something really difficult.

Unbeknownst to us at the time, it was realized too much later because there was no history of cancer at all in my mom’s family. It was really stressful. It was a rapid, rare, one-in-a-million type of cancer. The growth rate of the tumor, they were sort of able to take it back, dated back to probably when my dad was dying. So that wasn’t something that we put together till later. Because, of course, we weren’t taking care of ourselves. We were hyper-focused on him.

Fast forward—back to that kind of caretaking. Well, we never really left that caretaking space with my mama. As a result, I developed a lot of inflammation in my body. We hear about this all the time. Inflammation can come from, again, externals in the form of the food we eat and the environment we’re in, but also internal—the way we manage our stress, our thoughts, and our processing, which is about to change our mind body, heart body, and our physical body.

After a few years, I had a lot of sort of imbalances and discomforts. I’d get sick with some cold or flu every year after the holidays because it’s when I was going so hard as a chef then. After all, that was my primary career. A tissue was damaged in my chest, and I had surgery.

I got MRSA from the surgery. So it’s very common in hospitals and what we consider very sterile environments. But at the same time, there are still a lot of germs and bacteria there. So I got MRSA, and it’s a deadly staph infection. It’s resistant to the most effective antibiotics. 

Then that became a journey of mine for the next eight surgeries. For about eight years, I have been trying to get this out. It was in my chest, so it took us several years. I changed doctors and surgeons and had the head of the infectious disease department at UCLA. We finally figured it out. Then a breast cancer doctor and oncologist, we finally figured out that MRSA was nestled into the milk ducts in my breasts.

I know that you understand this, that feminine body, but also that there’s this surgery happening there. There’s sickness. So that was part of my journey, but it led me to a place where I came up with what I do now, which is—I’m not sure if I shared it with you, but I almost died after my fourth surgery.

No, you haven’t. 

So that, again, is all part of this journey. You know, I started my career as a chef. I went to study culinary arts and learned how to make beautiful food as medicine. That was my inspiration from my parents. Seeing that with traditional medicine, they weren’t getting what they needed, and looking at other alternatives, believing there was more than what we were doing, not to say that I have anything. I’m not opposed to traditional, allopathic, or Western medicine, but I believe there’s more.

Yeah. So I went to culinary school to study food as medicine. I felt that was missing in that process with my parents and dived into nutrition, holistic nutrition, and Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. So that’s how I transitioned into a practitioner, through food as a chef, catering for people in the private space. All the while, I had this underlying health issue of my own.

I had this MRSA that was inside of me. I was constantly managing a baseline of higher levels of inflammation just from being a very high performer and going that sort of entrepreneurial blood running through my stream. It culminated in me having to have surgery. So again, it’s the fourth one to try and get rid of this MRSA that was constantly causing problems. I was doing everything, then a new diet and lifestyle-wise to keep it at bay.

But this is something that had to come out of my body. So I had my surgery, and 12 days post-op, I had a massive hematoma. I didn’t feel right. Now, this is my fourth. I’ve had a few surgeries. It’s like your body gets hit by a truck or train, you have major surgery for hours, and you’re under anesthesia. So certain things I felt used to didn’t feel quite right personally.

My body was trying to tell me something, and I didn’t know what it was. I didn’t feel quite right. I felt weaker than normal. There was still some bleeding. I told my surgeon, and he said that leaves drained in and would go a couple more days, even though I’d already had them in for several days. At that point, it was ten days. Then, on the 12th day, I had a massive hematoma, bleeding caused internally by a stitch that tore.

Oh, my goodness. You’ve been through hell and back—my goodness.

But this is how you learn. So because of that, it was a whole thing. I truly believe that my daddy, who passed, and other angels were looking out for me. It was truly a miracle. I was bleeding. I lost almost two liters of blood. I was by myself in my apartment. I somehow got one of my clients—it was a Saturday afternoon—to call in the medical director at Cedars, who happens to have a trauma unit, to try a separate trauma office and OR ten blocks from my house. They came and got me and saved my life.

Wow.

Yeah. So many blessings. So often, I have to reflect on that moment when we look at blessings and miracles when they’re in a beautiful form. When something incredible happens to you, you’re like, “what a blessing! What a miracle. I’m so lucky.” What I’ve come to realize is that blessings and miracles come in every form. Even on that journey, when that happened, it was a blessing to have these people in my life, live where I was living, and have the right people pick up the phone.

So many blessings, and it was a tough journey healing from that. I wasn’t well. I was weak. There were a lot of things. I obviously couldn’t cook. I didn’t know for how long. I couldn’t use the upper left side of my body so I couldn’t cook.

What?

Yeah, I couldn’t move it. It took months, and I thought, “wow, how will I support myself? This is my livelihood, and I can’t cook.” I can barely move. I could scarcely go from my bedroom to the bathroom. I’m so weak, and yet this MRSA is still inside my body, by the way. It was still there.

Oh, my goodness.

That’s when I realized, “okay, wait, I have all this information. I have all this nutrition knowledge. I’ve been studying this since my dad got sick. It’s been years now.” So I just put this into the food and talked to my clients about this when I was cooking for them and thought, “well, what can I do with that?” And I know what to do pre-operative and post-operative.

Our internal compass holds immense power.

I can accelerate my body for healing. Because after this happened with nearly dying, I still had to have another surgery where they had just gone in, taken it out, stopped the bleeding and stitched me up. I looked like Frankenstein, and I was nearly neurotic. They said, “you couldn’t return for at least two months because you’ve lost so much blood. You need to get back your hemoglobin.”

I thought, “I can’t live like this for eight weeks. I’ve got to find a way to do it in a shorter time.” So just using my knowledge of how to pair foods and nutrition supplements, how to eat, and when to eat, I just put myself on a disciplined program, and I was able to raise my levels in five weeks, then go back into surgery to repair things.

But that experience made me think, “Okay, I can still help people without putting food in front of them. I can still help people without feeding them.” That was how I initially thought, “this is how I’m going to teach people, and I want to help.” I just took the cooking part out. Then I started to build my nutritional consulting practice. That was now not just straightforward nutrition. It was this combination of your energy bodies. 

It was very intuitive. Intuitive is not exactly what it is—integrative, functional, intuitive, all of it. That’s where culinary alchemy, this method that I have, was birthed from, so it was taking your physiology, physical body, and energy body. At that point, I started going into more spiritual practices and working with a master healer.

A correlation exists between our energy centers and sacral and solar plexus, which governs our route.

Every time we had a session, I realized she told me about these areas of my body and my energy centers where she’s releasing blocks or balancing. So I thought, “well, how can I help her? How can I take what she’s doing? How am I blocking myself?” Some of it is our emotions, and some are our thoughts. But our energy centers line up with our physical body and our organs. 

So realizing this correlation exists between our energy centers and what governs our route, sacral and solar plexus. Those imbalances also align with those areas of our body and those organ systems. That’s when I realized, “wow, I can eat the food and the stuff to support those organ systems while supporting my energy centers.” 

This became Culinary Alchemy and this sort of method, and I started applying it to my clients that I already had who were open to trying something a little different. And we’ve got results. So while I was waiting to heal, while I was going through the healing process to be able to use my left hand and left arm again, the way I was, I didn’t even know if I was going to at the time, I dived into just the consulting part. So that brought me to where I am today.

Wow, that’s an incredible story. What do you think was driving you? Because some people go through many hardships. Some people take it and channel it to what you created today. Some people honestly don’t do the research, or they believe the doctors, or they just give up. What do you think was your drive? What was driving you to take this excursion?

To go in this direction.

And it’s been mentally, physically, and emotionally on so many levels. You can’t move your body. There is so much uncertainty, like, “where did you get the freaking strength to move forward and to do what you do? What did you do?”

Yeah, I draw from what we all have within. We forget. I was sitting there because entering a victim state is very easy. It’s easy. We’ve all done it. But, even if you’re not a victim, you’re a student of Tony Robbins as I am. He’s a friend and mentor and will forever be a student of what he teaches. At the time, I didn’t even know Tony Robbins existed. 

It was just full of that mentality. It was the, “what is my life? Why is this happening? Here I am.” I’m sitting up against the wall of my little apartment in my bedroom. I need to use the restroom, which is really on the other side of the wall. I can’t move. I’m so weak. I’m bracing myself to crawl around the wall to get into the bathroom, and then I will be wiped out again.

Just the heat and information from my poor body for what it had been through just drenched me in sweat all the time. So back then, I had such sympathy and empathy for women going through menopause because I’d wake up drenched in sweat multiple times a night where I’d have to change my sheets, but then I’d have to move to different parts my bed. Because the body was trying to heal, and I had undergone so much. 

My mission is about something much greater than me. My mission is in service.

I was in it for a couple of weeks, thinking, “what is my life? I’m a good person. Why did this happen to me? Why is this happening to me? What did I do wrong?” So you go through all of that, right? Then there is this reminder, where I always go when I’m in a tough spot, which is remembering that there’s something greater than myself. 

When we’re in that victim state, we focus on ourselves. We’re focused on our pain, agony, experience, and suffering when we can grasp something bigger than you: if you have children, and maybe your children.

What was bigger than yourself then for you? What was it for you? What was that moment or that shift?

Yeah, it was remembering why I’m doing what I’m doing. It was my dad and mom, remembering, “why am I a chef?” You know, “why am I here? Why am I worried about not being able to make a living?” Because I can’t use my left hand. Why am I here, and why am I alive? It was to remember. I’m supposed to be doing this. I have this mission. I have this reason for having gone to college. I have this reason for what I am doing. That’s what I’m supposed to be getting back to. 

Just remembering that was enough. I’m focused on myself right now. My mission is not about me, and my mission is about something that is so much greater than me. My mission is in service. My mission is serving. It’s not even quantifiable. Once you share and you put information on the internet, whether it’s just to your immediate circle or your larger community, it is immeasurable. That’s why I’m here.

Getting outside yourself is step-by-step, so try looking at different perspectives.

It was like, “oh, my gosh, I need to get better.” I need to improve because this is what I’m here for. I’m not here to sit against the wall and cry about my miserable life. So when you’re in a hopeless state or hopeless mindset in this frame of mind where you’re feeling hopeless and lost, I’m saying, “focus on something else.” Focusing on something greater than you is helpful. 

You may or may not be able to be attuned to that now. The other part of it was whether or not you’re religious, spiritual, or just whether you believe in God or the universe, or angels, whatever it is that you believe in. 

My core belief is that we weren’t put here to suffer. That’s not what the universe wants us to do. That’s not what God would like. So we’re not put here to suffer. So that means that whatever we’re going through feels painful and like suffering. There’s something on the other side of that. It’s just about getting to the other side because that’s not something greater than us, some higher beings and higher power. That’s not why we’re here. 

We’re not here to suffer, but we are here to learn. So what do I need to know at this moment? What is it that I’m not seeing? What is the lesson that makes it? It’s either right before me or right on the other side of what I’m looking at, or I need to look at and have a phrase I say quite often to my team to other clients. It’s just looking at something with a thousand sets of eyes instead of just one. It just gives you much.

I love that. And how do you do that? How do you get outside yourself and have those thousand sets of eyes?

Well, it’s a step-by-step thing. If I believe that, “Okay, this feels awful right now. This is painful. This sucks. None of this makes sense.” If we’re in that space, where like, “why is this happening?” Then you take that opportunity to answer your own why. And the why is “okay, maybe it’s right before me. What is it that I’m not seeing that’s right in front of me that I’m not picking up on?”

Our knowledge and consciousness come down to what we source from ourselves when we source from our higher self.

If I can’t figure it out just by looking at it, I will put on another set of eyes, what’s behind what’s right in front of me. I keep going and looking further and further and further out. What happens is, if you put your hand right in front of your face, you can’t see anything, right? You see your skin. You might see some of the lines. It’s just putting things out further and further and further. It’s just perspective and trying to know who you are from 30,000 feet up,

Do you do that in meditation, or do you do some writing exercises?

I do meditation. A couple of things have helped me when I’ve been in that space. First, I didn’t have these tools when this happened. When I almost died after that fourth surgery, I had to recover, then I had to have a fifth, and I’m completely lost not knowing. So I didn’t have those tools, but I have what we all have. We all have a compass and an internal compass. We all have this voice. We have our intuition. We have this sense of ourselves that is very powerful.

You forget about it. We lose sight of it, and it gets drowned out in the noise of everything around us. Ultimately, everything that I’m teaching, whether it’s food or supplements or longevity tips, and the stories I share about mindfulness and mindset, comes down to what we source from ourselves when we source from that internal or our higher self.

It’s like forgetting that power is really within us. We just get drowned out when we get distracted. Going within is what I always do, and I didn’t learn it. It took being at that point, asking and being in whether you call a victim or whatever you are fully in. Why is this happening? What is my life like? Is this my life sweating against this wall? What am I going to be able to crawl to the other side? Is this my life? 

We explore and discover many paths that lead to our ultimate destination.

And the answer is no. No matter where we’re at, at our lowest, most difficult, most painful points, when you ask yourself that the answer is always no, this is not your life. Your life is much greater than how we’ve narrowed our focus. So I hold up my hand and use that because usually, that’s our perspective when we’re in that mental space, we’re looking at this, and we think, this is my whole world.

I can’t see anything I can’t see around it. I see no beauty, no light. I see nothing. You hold your hand further up. Now you know the room, and you see the outside. You see the sun, and you see nature, and you see all the things. We all do it. So human. It’s a human experience. We often do that. When I look at something with a thousand eyes, it’s as if I’m sitting here. I can’t see what’s behind me, what’s above me, what’s below me, what’s in the sides of me unless I turn my eyes and look.

But if I’ve got a thousand sets of eyes, I can see everything. So often, you can see everything because you’ve already seen it before. So if you’re sitting here right now in this room, and you look out, and for any listeners, if you’re sitting down, you just look straight and don’t turn your head anywhere. All you see is what’s right in front of you.

If all sets of your eyes are open, you can take in much more information.

But at one point, you saw what’s on each side of you. You’ve seen what’s behind you. You’ve seen every angle of the room that you’re in at one point. So you have to imagine that you’ve got 360 eyes. Now if all those eyes are open, you can take in much more information. You’re looking at every single nook and cranny of this room. You’re taking in the light. You’re taking in the sand. You’re taking in everything. 

We have them all if you’re looking at it with all those eyes. That’s perspective. That’s intuition. That’s our internal compass. That’s our higher self. That’s all of it. So in those moments, when you’re like, is this how things are? Do you know the answer to this case? In other cases, the answer is always yes. But in this case, the answer is always no. There’s always more. There’s always better. This is just temporary.

Remember who you are. We’re all very powerful, and we forget it. There’s a quote by Dave Grohl. He’s a singer-songwriter from a band. He says, “No one is you, and that is your biggest power.” And we forget that because we look for external validation in different forms.

Yes, do you believe in multiple timelines, jumping timelines, in creating a different movie for yourself?

I do. I’ve talked about this stuff with Stephan, but I just came from a weekend, and I worked out well. We talked a lot about quantum. We’ve talked about the multiverse, the different dimensions, the toroids, and the toroidal universe we all exist in. We talked about all that.

We talked about black holes, wormholes, and the zero plane. So I believe in all of that. We live in a multi-dimensional existence. I think that some things are, in some ways, living in what’s already happened. It’s almost like we’re catching up to that. But, at the same time, I also believe there are different paths to your ultimate outcome. That’s the journey of your existence. 

With free will, you can go in a slightly different direction. Our endpoints are usually the same. But the journey to how we get to that endpoint, there can be a variety to that, a variety of options, and that’s based on free will, and you build, as you say to create different outcomes. But that’s just sort of longer.

And the choice you made at that moment against the wall, drenching in sweat. That aha moment and decision shifted the outcome from, like you said, a victim to someone who is such a leader in her area and such a bright light with all you do. I have so much deeper appreciation for the person that you are now. I know you, and you’re sweet, but I didn’t know your story in this depth.

With free will, you can go in a slightly different direction.

It’s just like, wow, it’s amazing. It’s impressive. I can understand the drive. By looking at you, I would never even imagine that you’ve been through any suffering in your life because you’re so light and bubbly, and everything is great, you know? So yeah, it’s just impressive, beautiful, and inspiring.

Oh yeah, I would love to.

Because it’s so nice to hear that perspective, it’s very inspiring. 

Well, it’s also our mind. I would love to remind your listeners, mine, and anyone listening that so much of it is just our mind. If you have a belief, you will seek and search for why that belief is true. If you believe you’re a victim, you will look at your situation, and your brain will be, see, this is proof.

It’s just going to pull all the information from your situation to validate and confirm this belief, this perception, whether in mind or visually in every one of your senses, that you are a victim under your circumstances. If you say no to that and say, “no, I don’t know exactly what my purpose is, or maybe you do have your purpose.” 

So many of our experiences are just from our minds.

You’re like, “no, I know, I’m more than this. I know that I have a greater purpose than this. I know that I am greater at this moment right now. I am not measured at this moment.” So you’re telling your brain on a subconscious, conscious and unconscious level, “okay, validate this, validate this, give me other reasons. Show me how I’m more, how this is a no, what’s my why.”

It starts to happen, and you don’t even realize it. Once you said, “no, that’s not me. This is what I need to be doing. This is who I am. I’m here to serve.” So all this information that was already right in front of us starts to come in. But our brain wasn’t pulling it out because it was trying to validate a different one.

It was easy with our victim mentality rather than focusing on a brighter, beautiful future. It was like a pullback, not a forward. That makes a lot of sense. So your brand, Serena Loves, what is it? I wanted to talk more about that, and I know you have a new supplement line, and I want to share this with the audience. So you could share a little bit about that.

Thank you. Yeah, so Serena Loves is my brand that’s evolved into a lifestyle brand and even more. Really what it is, is just all the things I love. In my journey, what I’ve learned, helped me, helped my clients, and what I love that I know is useful for others. That’s really how the platform started, how the brand started.

Let me share food nutrition in that way. There’s a lot on there with that. Then obviously, I’m very spiritual. I’m a Reiki Master. That’s part of my practice, the method, and what I do. So there are tools for that, from very special sprays. They have been Reiki crystals, crystals, bracelets, and a special candle we created in honor of my daddy.

Yeah, I have that candle. It’s so good. It was so sweet of you. I love how your products’ packaging is impeccable. It’s so beautiful. It’s so luxurious. I love it.

Thank you. We want them to be experiential. It’s supposed to nurture, love, and touch you in a way that empowers you.

I even saved the box because it is such a nice box to keep.

Great. Yeah, it’s for that. We hope you’ve all seen them for that exact reason. They carry a frequency because everything was blessed. Everything’s blessed in Reiki before they go out to people, so it felt like a natural transition to offer supplements, something I had considered years ago. It’s a big undertaking, so I didn’t do it initially. Then COVID happened.

2020 was the busiest year I’d had with my business until then. It’s just gotten busier since. But up to that point when 2020, gosh, I had never worked so hard. Now I think back to 2020. I work ten times harder now. The point was that it was COVID, and everything that happened brought people to this greater awareness of themselves and their health. 

We want our products to be experiential. It’s supposed to nurture, love, and touch you in a way that empowers you.

There were so many questions that were coming in on what to take and on what to do. I thought, “okay, it’s time to put something out there because there are certain brands I love that I recommend and use myself.” There are a lot of brands out there that don’t have the same level of quality. Their processes are the same from ingredient to fulfillment. 

So finally, it’s time to put out some products that we know are great. I know that they’re high quality. I know that they’re effective. I know that they helped other people. 

So what kind of supplements do you have?

We have things for the gut. We have digestive support. We have a lot of stress support because that has been its running theme. But at the same time, from COVID to now, it’s a constant. So we have stress support, adrenal support, energy and metabolism support. We’ve got sleep anxiety support and all of that. Then now, immune support as well.

I need all of it.

Oh yeah, gosh. I have to send you some. We have eight skews that came out right before the holidays. Then we have five more that are launching very soon. So then the entire collection will be available.

Okay, so top tips. Take care of your mind body, whether through meditation, breathwork, just quiet time, fifteen minutes to yourself, or just thinking about what you’re grateful for. Take care of your physical body, stay hydrated, eat the rainbow, and choose wholesome, whole foods, whatever your diet is.

And the most important thing is to love yourself as much as you loved yourself before. And you can do that in different ways. Those three are going to ensure you a stellar life. You know, long life.
